Land Rover’s LRX concept at Pebble Beach

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.

The Land Rover LRX concept was first shown to the world back in January. It has since been making the car show tours, and now with its premier at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance, Gerry McGovern, design director for Land Rover describes how the car fits into the company’s heritage.

The LRX is expected to be the replacement for the Freelander. The concept was shown as a hybrid diesel package to keep up with modern fuel economy demands. While this car is supposed to be a revolution in Land Rover design, remember this is the company that never had to go retro with the design of Range Rover, because it’s had only three generations in 38 years.

In fact, the LRX concept looks like it shares some of the same cues from the 2004 Range Stormer concept, which was the forerunner for the Range Rover Sport.

1005 hp Lamborghini Gallardo by Heffner Performance

1005 hp Lamborghini Gallardo by Heffner Performance

After the Bugatti Veyron, and the recently launched Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, another car hits the 1000 hp limit: the Lamborghini Gallardo. With a little help from Heffner Performance, the Gallardo you see in the photos is powered by the same 5.0-liter high-rev V10 engine as the "standard” version but with a little sweetening from Heffner develops now an astonishing 1005 hp and 765lb-ft. The vehicle uses the same AWD system but due to the big amount of power a two stage boost controller limit has been installed for the 1st and 2nd gear.

The modifications for the car are extreme: the tuner installed new steels cylinder liners, new forged pistons, bearings, a new twin-turbo system with custom exhaust system, blow-off valves, Carrillo Billet Steel connecting rods rated for 1000 hp and a new clutch capable to transfer the amount of power. Also, new water pumps and fuel injectors were installed, as well as a Superleggera rear diffuser and spoiler. No words about the performances of the car but imagine that at 1005 hp the car does the 0-60 mph sprint in less than 4 seconds and has a top speed of 200+ mph.

2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.

Back in 1985, Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca asked his engineers to build him a convertible out of a K-Car. Production convertibles in the early 80s had been absent from the North American market due to safety concerns, and Iacocca wanted a car he could enjoy for the summertime. Iacocca claims that wherever he went people were interested in the car. This left enough of an impression on him that the next year the Le Barron convertible was born, and ended a nearly fourteen-year drought of convertibles for Chrysler.

Our Chrysler Sebring Limited is a descendent of that original rebirth of the American convertible, and this car shows it. Just like how American cars are best known, the Sebring is big and roomy convertible with a plush ride.

GM giving employee discount to everyone (and sometimes more)

General Motors may be gunning to reclaim the world’s largest automaker title (or more likely looking to kick-start the slowing American market.) Tomorrow General Motors will relaunch the “employee discount for everyone” incentive program. This is a program that GM used in the summer of 2005 to great initial success. The program is expected to run through September 2nd.

This is a significant price break. As the Automotive News reported, a 2008 Buick Enclave crossover that lists for $44,010 will sell for an employee price of $39,561. A Buick Lucerne sedan that lists for $35,220 carries an employee price of $31,813. GM will go further into discount on some models. On top of the employee discount, it will offer cash back on slower-selling light trucks including the Silverado pickup, said a dealer who had just been briefed by GM.

Those in the industry who opposed the program were concerned last time that GM let the program run for too long, which meant that there were no perspective customers left for the year-end sales. Also the deep discounts may harm the residual values of GM cars.

Ford Kuga by Wolf

Ford Kuga by Wolf

Although Ford doesn’t currently sell the curvy SUV Kuga in the U.S., its rumored that the car may be part of the European Ford invasion over the next few years. So we thought it would be cool to take a look at how some performance modifications from the German tuner Wolf can add some speed to the fast looks. The new package includes an ECU tweaking from 136 hp to 158 hp, at a mere price of 795 euros or $ 1,170. Also a new set of 20 inch alloy wheels were added at a price of 2,850 euros or $ 4,197 per set. More details after the jump.

Dinan to boost 2008 Bmw M3 to 628 hp

Since its launch, the 2008 Bmw M3 made quite a buzz, but now Dinan is pushing it to its limits. Dinan, a well-respected BMW tuner known for working miracles on the Bavarian cars, said today that its new version of the M3 will be powered by a 5.7-liter engine capable to develop 628 hp. The “standard” M3 is powered by a V8 engine developing 420 hp and can go from 0-60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. With a boost to 628 hp, the Dinan M3 will beat out its brothers, the M5 and M6. No launch date has been set, but of course we’re going to stay on top of this hot M3. Stay tuned!

Rolls-Royce turned into a tank

It seems that British television needs ideas to get rid of old Rolls-Royces. Jeremy Clarkson drove a Silver Shadow into a pool a few years ago for Top Gear, and now the guys at Fifth Gear have gone a few steps further. Watch as they take their Silver Shadow and turn it into an armored tank. It may no longer be fast or graceful, but it can now take live rounds.

Chevy Volt to go Opel, then Chevy again

Chevy Volt to go Opel, then Chevy again

General Motors is looking to be bringing the Volt to Europe by late 2011. This is earlier than initially reported. GM needs to spread out as much of the high-cost of development and production of the gas/electric hybrid as possible, so multiple outlets are being considered. Opel is working on its own plug-in hybrid vehicles, and the Volt is expected to join that lineup. But once Opel has a strong electric presence, it is rumored that the Volt will be changed to be sold as a Chevrolet.

Chevrolet is not a name necessarily associated with quality in Europe. Most of the Chevy products there are just know for their inexpensive price because offerings are just re-badged Daewoos. The Corvette is sold over there, but not as a Chevy. Instead the sports car is presented as its own brand sold out of Cadillac dealerships. So if the Volt eventually switches to the Chevrolet name, it may give the company a much-needed image boost.

The fastest Mini

Enjoy some video of what BMW has just declared as the “World’s Quickest and Fastest MINI”. This is a 650-horsepower MINI Cooper S drag racer, built by ABF Performance. The little car ran the quarter mile in 10.48 seconds at 135.16 MPH. It even beat out a Big-Block-equipped Camaro.
